NTU Wine Society President Mini-Interview

The French Cellar Community

Xin Wei Chia
xinwei
Xin Wei, you are the President of NTU Wine Society, what is your relationship with wine?

My relationship with wine is fairly complicated, on one hand i love drinking wine, but on the other, i’m constantly bounded by limitations such as the price, availability, etc. Moreover, when it comes to hosting events with my colleagues, given how limited our student society budget is, there is always a price attached to wine that we have to take note of. Hence in search of the most value for money and easily purchasable wine in Singapore, i have to admit that wine has annoyed me at times too.

How was The French Cellar tasting event organized at NTU campus?
Our members absolutely loved it! A few came up to me and mentioned how much they’ve learnt from it and are already asking when is the next TFC event. Also, needless to say, the french wine that we drank was great. To be honest, due to the budget constrains that we constantly face, our wine appreciation events rarely involves French wine alone (usually mixed with New Worlds) This is partly due to the higher cost associated with them. Hence, being able to organise a french wine only event was truly an eye opener as we learnt about the various regions of France, and tasted Rose, Red, White and even Sparkling.
What do you think about The French Cellar subscription box?

Sad to say, i’ve been drinking dirt cheap wine bought from supermarkets and as the price goes, i’ve nothing to comment about them. As a student, i have to admit that quality wine is not exactly part of my monthly budget. However, now that i’m sharing TFC subscription box with two of my other wine loving friends, i have to admit that it has ruined my tastebuds for dirt cheap wine. Which is a totally good thing, because the world of wine is full of surprises, and trust me, the wines found in supermarkets can barely scrap the surface. And sharing is such a good idea because, we get to really appreciate and drink good french wine once every month with a fraction of the cost. What better excuse to get together with your friends then “our wine has arrived!”

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

Yes i would, because firstly, it is not easy to find good french wine in the supermarkets (believe me i’ve tried dozens of time in attempt to source for quality wine for our events). Secondly, the cost, a good wine in the supermarkets or wine shops will cost at least $50 and above. Think about how worthwhile it is to get such value for money wines with free delivery! But that being said, for students, i would strongly recommend you guys to share it with your friends. Like i said, what better way then to spend time with your friends over a glass of good wine?

Thanks Xin Wei, glad to have you in The French Cellar community!

Special Mini-interview The French Cellar CEO

The French Cellar Community

vmedm3
Vincent Morello, PhD
Chief Executive Officer
 –

Vincent, The French Cellar is turning 3 years old?

Yes, 3 years already! I remember the launch 3 years ago, 1st October 2013… Such an amazing journey, I want to thank all our Members.  We have shipped tens of thousands of bottles from French vineyards to Singapore, more than 80% of our customers are Singaporean, It’s our pleasure and our pride.

What is the philosophy behind The French Cellar wine subscriptions?

Wine is expensive in Singapore, and French wines are even more pricey. Everybody who has been to France knows finding amazing wine is not a matter of price… In regions such Languedoc, Provence, Loire,  Alsace, etc.., enjoying wine is not a matter of price!

At The French Cellar, we don’t care about the label, we don’t care about marketing scores, we care about the taste and we care about the value. France has more than 100,000 wineries, we only import 72 wines from 72 winemakers a year.  In 3 years, we have imported wines from every French region, from Savoie to Corsica, from Bordeaux to Jura, from Provence to Loire.

The French Cellar model is different because we don’t sell bottles, we sell memberships. We take care of our Members, my job is to make sure every month quality wines are delivered to their doorstep.

Can you tell more about The French Cellar corporate services?

Yes, a few months ago, we have decided to launch a dedicated service to corporate: wine appreciation events and subscription gifts.

Our wine subscription packages can be offered as a gift,  a monthly and customizable gift that lasts! The French Cellar wine appreciation events are like a “tour de France”, within 2 hours 5 wines from 5 regions are explored with explanations and tips. I’m convinced wine is for everybody, no need to be an expert to enjoy wines…

I’m grateful so many companies, clubs, associations use our service. We will continue to give our best to make their partners, staff and clients happy!

Last words?

Thank you very very much to all our Members and our clients!

Making French wine accessible, unintimidating and fun! Our ambition, your pleasure, our pleasure!

“In Singapore it is a very expensive way to learn about wines by trial and error.”

The French Cellar Community

Peter Earnshaw
IMG_1945

Peter,  why did you subscribe to The French Cellar?

In Singapore it is a very expensive way to learn about wines by trial and error.  With the French Cellar you are guaranteed to have an excellent set of wine delivered each month.  I recently took out a second subscription because one was just not enough.

Are sommelier’s tasting notes sent to you every month with the wines useful?

The concept behind the French cellar is to not only provide you with the wine but alos help you understand why you like a certain type of wine.  The tasting notes allow you to understand what characteristics of the wine you like so that when you buy a bottle in a restaurant or shop you know the sort of profile of wine you actually enjoy.  I actually use the website for the tasting notes as I don’t always drink the wine straight away so normally loose the hard copy notes.

You attended a few wine tastings, how were the events?

The wine tastings are one of the key benefits of the French Cellar.  They are purposely kept to small groups and the hosts (such as Lucas) are incredibly knowledgeable about wine.  It is an excellent night out to learn more about wine as well as meet other people who are interested in the world of French wine.  It is also a great way to taste some of the wine that you have already received but not opened and ask the team at the French Cellar about food pairings etc.

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

I already have because it means they are then guaranteed to have decent wine in their house for the next time I visit.

Thanks Peter, glad to have you in The French Cellar community!

 catherine

Catherine, how was the wine tasting you organized for your company?

It was a great wine appreciation session ; both educational and fun ; and a great change from our stressful worklife.
Before subscribing to The French Cellar, how did you pick your French wines?

Before The French Cellar, I was never a French wine drinker cos the French wine I tried wasn’t nice, so I am now a convert and look forward to my delivery each month.

How is your Vineyard Gems journey so far?

It’s a great experience ; always expectant to what I will receive next.

Would you recommend TFC to your friends?

Already did. we are planning to organize another wine tasting session.

Thank you very much Catherine

“It’s always nice to receive a delivery every month bearing two bottles to surprise you and to learn something new, especially with regards to relatively unknown regions.”

The French Cellar Community

Dr Tan Lay Kok
laykok
Dr Tan, what do you think about The French Cellar wine subscription concept?
It’s an excellent idea and offers an ideal and affordable way to discover all that French wine has to offer.
You are subscriber since more than 2 years, how is the French wine journey so far?
It has been very enjoyable and educational, with guided forays into regions other than the more familiar Bordeaux and Burgundy. It’s always nice to receive a delivery every month bearing two bottles to surprise you and to learn something new, especially with regards to relatively unknown regions. The notes are particularly helpful in providing detailed yet structured information about the lexicon, the region, the grape varietals, the wine making process , history etc in a systematic and unpretentious way.
You recently attended a Corporate wine tasting, how was the experience?
It was certainly a most pleasant way to end a workweek and to welcome the weekend. Marc and Lucas were fantastic , putting everyone at ease with their easy and Gallic humour. The five wines were well chosen and the order of progression was well thought out. Everyone had a great time.
Would you recommend TFC to your friends?
Yes I have.

Thank you very much Dr Tan!

“Nicolas Rebut is like the Django Reinhardt or Stevie Wonder of wine”

Jez Tan

 –

Jez, did you enjoy The French Cellar wine tasting and dinners you recently (and frequently) attended?

The French Cellar tastings have always been interesting, engaging, enriching and refreshing! The dinner brings elated wine lovers together to dine, interact and learn. I can’t get enuff of these sessions.

Why did you choose to subscribe to our Vineyard Gems + Tasting Voyage  + Grands Crus subscription plans?

I actually subscribed to all 3 packages at one point. But the Grand Crus are stuff that I have been very used to drinking, while Vineyard Gems and Tasting Voyage features exciting wines from the other 11 wine producing regions of France that drinkers here are less familiar with. And my, the nectar from heaven that you send me every month really refreshing and tantalize my palate so much, my current monthly orders are 2 sets of Tasting Voyage, 4 sets of Vineyard Gems so that I can cellar the extra bottles in case they get sold out on The French Cellar website.

What do you think about our sommelier’s selections so far?

Wonderful and exquisite selections. It’s like music, you need to get the gypsies to play authentic gypsy jazz, the blacks to sing heartfelt gospel, and the french to know their wines. Of cos anyone can do all those, but I figure Nicolas Rebut is like the Django Reinhardt or Stevie Wonder of wine. Absolutely wide spectrum of seriously drinkable selections that’s light on the wallet.

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

Absolutely!

Thank you very much Jez

“The quality of the wines and tasting events and how the service has helped improve my appreciation of French wines are what drives me to share The French Cellar with my family and friends”

I find the tasting events very interesting. Other than learning and picking up tips on appreciating French wine, i also got to meet interesting people from varied backgrounds at the event. The candid interactions and common interest make drinking that glass of wine that much more fun.
Before being Member of The French Cellar, how did you pick up French wines?
Before i got to know of The French Cellar and subscribing to their Vineyard Gems plan, i was literally picking up any bottles from the supermarkets and keeping my fingers crossed that i have picked up a reasonably good wine.
Which French wine surprised you the most?
I especially liked the bottle ‘il fait soif‘ from Cotes Du Rhone. So much so that I reordered more of the bottles to share with my family.
Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?
Yes. Definitely. The quality of the wines and tasting events and how the service has helped improve my appreciation of French wines are what drives me to share The French Cellar with my family and friends

“The French Cellar wine tasting events are very different from the normal wine tasting events”

The French Cellar Community

Nathalie Ng
–

How are The French Cellar wine tasting events?

The French Cellar wine tasting events are very different from the normal wine tasting events that you get from places like Merchants, or Wine Connection. Tasting at TFC actually has food pairings that go with the various wines, and Vincent and Eric lead you through the wines from the lightest to the most-heavy ones on your palate.

Not only that, but they also tell you more about wines; what does blanc de noir mean (white wine from black grapes, in case you were wondering), and how sparkling wines are made. At a TFC wine tasting event, you not only learn more about the wine you’re tasting, but more about wines in general, and that’s something that sets it apart from various other wine tasting events.

Why did you subscribe to The French Cellar?

Last year in July, right before I was to fly to Paris for a holiday, I went to my first TFC wine tasting event at Three Bistro. Before this, wine was something I disliked – the astringency of what little wine I’ve tasted left (quite literally) a sour taste in my mouth. However, the wines that were being sent around at this event were complex, and I decided to sign up on the spot. Anyway, you can stop anytime you want. I haven’t cancelled my subscription since. ;)

nathalieng

What is your favourite wine you received?

It’ll be hard to pick a favourite. My taste in wines tends towards full-bodied reds.  For whites, it would be the Cremant de Bourgogne Blanc de Noir, while for red, it would be a Provence wine, Domaine La Badiane!

Would you recommend The French Cellar?

Yes, and I have. TFC subscriptions actually bring to you wines that you wouldn’t usually pick for yourself when you walk into a wine shop.

Thank you very much Nathalie!

Glad to have you in The French Cellar community

Mini-Interview – Dr Chris Yang

Mini-Interview #13

chrisyang

– Christopher, you attended a few wine tasting events, how was the wine tasting experience?

Yes, it was very good meeting you and the team your event. The wine tasting experience was nothing short of impressive. I still remember it vividly… The quality was really good, selection varied, and importantly, your events had great company. What is good wine without great company to share it with? So far, the wine quality is surprisingly better than I expected, and you can tell that a good amount of effort was put in to select the bottles

–  You have 2 subscriptions plans:  Vineyard Gems subscription and The Peak Wine Club subscription, may we know why?

I joined initially as a Peak  Wine Club Member, then during the subsequent wine tasting events, I also realized that the Vineyard Gems are really great value too. I thought that it would be an experientially interesting journey to go along with Vineyard Gems and also have the Grand Crus. This way, I have variety of wine and be able to appreciate the complexities of the classification. I was really getting the best of both worlds.

–  What’s the most surprising wine or pairing you enjoyed so far?

Every month, when the wines are delivered, it has always been a lot of anticipation and ends with a surprise. Fair to say that my friends, and myself, are enjoying the wines – always. If there is any other surprise, it would be that the consistency of getting good (value) wines and being able to learn so much about these wines. The tasting guide booklets and online PDFs have been the other significant enjoyment I get. It is always so often that you get the enquiry of “what wine is this?”, and seldom can we reply that it is actually a blend of two varietals, and you should be able experience the bouquets and characteristic hints.

-Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

Yes, I would recommend, and have been recommending my friends to The French Cellar. I really like the experiential learning journey with the guidance and the superbly selected wines. I don’t know anyone else who does this the way The French Cellar does, and I am really pleased with the exposure to the French wines that I have been receiving.

Thank you very much Dr Chris Yang

The French Cellar Community
Mini-Interview #12
Jessica Wang Sing Yee
–
Jessica, you subscribed to our Vineyard Gems offer more than 2 years ago, in February 2014…. You tasted more than 50 different wines, what do you think of our sommelier’s selections?
Simply awesome, I started with almost zero knowledge about wine but the wine tasting sessions opened my horizon. I had the honour to meet Nicolas Rebut himself and hear about his choices and selections. The wines chosen by French Cellar are always easy to drink and goes well with many of the Asian cuisine. I think the best is I hardly get any hang overs from the wines even if I drank a lot.
Has your perception of French wine evolved? Did you drink wines from Corsica, Savoie or Jura before being The French Cellar Member?
Definitely, because of French Cellar I decided to go to Marathon Du Medoc in France. I never thought that there are so many things going on in that bottle of wine until I joined the French Cellar. I always thought wine in France is only made in Bordeaux. But I didn’t know that even nearer the Northern part like Loire, there were vineyards. French Cellar allowed me to enjoy all the wines from France without having to go and source myself, it is definitely worth it and I enjoyed reading the little booklets about what I am given for the month. Receiving the wines are like receiving Christmas Gifts, there is always so much to look forward to.
jessica_miniinterview
Jessica Wang Sing Yee a wine lover and marathon runner who enjoys a good wine after every race.
How do you pair The French Cellar wines?
I usually share my bottle with my family members, who happen to be drinkers too, they never knew what French wine was about until I started the French Cellar subscription. Now my mother will ask me what is there from the French cellar and cooks based on the month’s selection. The reds from France are light and not that strong compared to Australian reds. So it is good to go with even some seafood.

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?
Some of my friends asked me about French Cellar before, I will tell them to try out the subscription themselves, it is definitely worth it.

You subscribed to our Vineyard Gems offer 18 months ago, how is your French wine journey so far?
It’s been really enjoyable. We always look forward to receiving our box for the month, and seeing what we get. It’s like a monthly surprise present to ourselves.
Which wines surprised you the most?
In general, we’ve been pleasantly surprised at how nice the Cremants you’ve selected are. Cheaper but just as satisfying as Champagnes!
Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

Special Mini-Interview – Maddy Barber – Kiss92 Radio presenter and co-founder of jewellery brand Madly

The French Cellar Community
Mini-Interview #10
Maddy Barber
Kiss92 Radio presenter and co-founder of jewellery brand MADLY
Maddy
Maddy, do you enjoy drinking wine?
I really enjoy a glass of wine with my food, but I don’t hold my liqueur well so a glass per meal is my max capacity. Special occasions and weekend dinners are when I indulge a little. My husband calls me a ‘cheap date’!

What do you think about The French Cellar wine subscription concept?
Extremely helpful for wine duds like myself. I love a good wine but know nothing about them, so I much prefer having mine picked by connoisseurs who always get it right!

Tell us more about the wines you received! Did you share them with friends, family?
I have honestly enjoyed every bottle from the French Cellar. We eat a lot of roast at home so it’s a perfect marriage. I don’t remember any of the names because they really are ALL good so I just happily await the next recommendation by our French sommelier

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?
Always. Can’t rave enough about it.

The French Cellar Community – Mini-interview Master Kevin Foong

The French Cellar Community
Master Kevin Foong
馮維宸
kevinfoong

– Are you a wine enthusiast? a French wine lover?

Yes, visited Bordeaux during my 20s and visited some of the wineries and fall in love with some of the wine selection. As a feng shui master, most of my clients are high net-worth individuals, where they always show me their impressive collection of good wines, especially from French. Locally, it is not easy to find good wines, apart from recommendation from some of the shops. Considered myself an amateur with limited wine knowledge, Jackie Lee commended The French Cellar which was god-sent as nothing beats good wine selection from an expert from French.

– Yin & Yang and wine, Yin & Yang in wine?

In Feng shui or Bazi reading (destiny analysis), we have to balance the energy between Yin and Yang, that contributes to success in life. Whether we are talking about balancing land energy, building structure concepts or the Yin and Yang environment in a person’s birth chart, anything that is off-balance turns out bad. Having too much fire element in a person birth chart, translate to him having heart, eyes and blood pressure problem. The same applies to wine.

Pairing good wine to good food was never an easy task to go with, even though the general concept teaches white wine is for white meat such as fish and chicken while the red wines blends well with beef, red meat. I certainly appreciate the details provided by The French Cellar on their brochures every time we received our new wines selection monthly. The details goes all the way to actual taste and description of the wine, to food pairing. It also educates us in-depth knowledge of different types of red & white wine.

– What do you think about The French Cellar subscription concept?

It is easy, hassle free for me to be able to taste good wines specially imported from French. The monthly subscription allows us to try different type of wines which fascinate me the most.

– Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

Certainly! Had already pass the words to my clients to increase their new portfolio of good wines!

Thank you very much

Glad  to have you in The French Cellar community

“Before The French Cellar, wine discovery was a random affair”

The French Cellar Community
Mini-Interview #8
–

Stefan Lim

CEO noisycrayons

– Before you subscribed to The French Cellar in 2014, how did you choose your wines?

Before The French Cellar, wine discovery was a random affair. It depended on where I was and who I was with. I visited supermarkets and small specialised retail stores where recommendations were either lacking or not forthcoming. Good wines were also pricey.
Access to good wines became an expensive activity that depended on luck, until The French Cellar came along. Now, I am served by a trusted sommelier who would scour the whole of France for good quality wines that are reasonably priced.

– Are sommelier’s tasting notes sent to you every month with the wines useful?

My affair with The French Cellar’s wines helped me develop intimate appreciation of how wine affects the palate and more. With the tasting notes, I have been placed on a journey of discovery. Every month, I gain an understanding of the geography, climate and conditions in the regions where the grapes are grown and wines made. I am  able to taste the best of France without having to physically be in all these regions.
guide HIW
– How do you usually enjoy wines?

Along the way, I discovered that depending on the context of your environment and company, every bottle of wine delivers a different palate and nose. The nature of work requires me to think deep and spend long nights in the office alone – a sip or two usually wakes the palate and re-energises the spirit. That said, sipping wines for solace is not ideal! Wines from The French Cellar are also best enjoyed with colleagues and friends and I’m pretty sure the wines smell and taste different when you are enjoy them with the people who matter.
stefanlimsniffing

– Would you recommend The French Cellar?

I would recommend wines from the The French Cellar to people who appreciate having wines selected for you by very qualified people who travel throughout the country in search of good yards and produce. It’s a great deal of work done for you, on your behalf. All you have to do is to sit back, relax and enjoy a sip of the best from a sprawling region of many many vineyards!
Thank you Stefan!

The French Cellar seen by a Singaporean scholar

The French Cellar Community
Mini-Interview #7

Timothy Tay

Timothy, we met you during one our wine tastings in January, how was the event?

The wine tastings organised by the The French Cellar provided a nice and relaxed setting to hang out with friends and learn more about French wines. It was very good value-for-money, since for just $30, we were able to taste and learn about 5 different quality wines, which is a real steal in Singapore. For someone with an interest in wine, but not much prior experience, I would certainly recommend attending one of the wine tasting events in the future.

As a Vineyard Gems subscriber, what do you think about Nicolas Rebut selections? A specific “coup-de-coeur”?

After each bottle of wine, I would always look forward to trying the next bottle. That should tell you how good the wines picked out by Nicolas Rebut are! In particular, I really enjoyed the bottle of pinot noir from Bourgogne in the recent delivery. It was probably one of the best pinot noirs that I have had so far.

 timothytay

You spent a few years studying physics in Cambridge University (UK) before coming back to Singapore, what is your perception of old world wine, and maybe more precisely your opinion about French wine?

While I was studying in Cambridge, I would attend the occasional wine tasting. It was there that I first started to learn about wine appreciation. Being located in Europe, we tended to focus on the Old World wines, and that is probably the raison d’être for my preference for French and Spanish wines. Having tasted good wines from some of the lesser known regions, I was aware of the possibility of getting really good value French wines. However, picking the right bottle on my own was always a challenge, and that is where The French Cellar has really shone.

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

I would definitely recommend The French Cellar to anyone who would like to have good French wine without having to go through the uncertainty of picking one.

Timothy, we are proud to have you in The French Cellar community

Pierre Thieulin– Mini-Interview #6

Mini-Interview #6
Pierre Thieulin
A Frenchman in Singapore, Vineyard Gems Member

Pierre, we met you during one our wine tastings in August 2014, how was the event?

When I arrived in Singapore I looked for a wine tasting event to do some networking and to enjoy good wines as it is my passion.

I found an advertisement through  a simple google search. That was the beginning of my adventure in Singapore, I met the friendly TFC organizers, tried some very good wines reasonably priced and met one of my best friend during this event.

I was satisfied with the variety of wines and the opportunity to try wines that are not commonly found in supermarkets or traditional  wine shops. Because wine tastings should not be about St Emilion or Gevrey-Chambertin that most people already tried in other tastings. It is made to discover new and surprising wines. French Cellar certainly succeed in this aspect.

I came back to other French Cellar events after that, with great pleasure and excitement.

As a Vineyard Gems subscriber, what do you think about Nicolas Rebut selections? A specific “coup-de-coeur”?

So far so good, I think Nicolas is an expert at sending to Singapore some rare wines, difficult to find in retail shops in France … which are worth having at home !

Still in shock after drinking the Cremant de Bourgogne, awesome sparkling wine, perfect for celebration and Singapore weather! Great alternative to the famous and expensive Champagne.

How do you usually enjoy your wines?

Mostly with friends, we all bring wines, try them and compare. Also occasionally at home with my girlfriend after a rough day at work.

Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?

Yes definitely. Already did.

 pierret
Merci Pierre!
Glad to have you in The French Cellar community

Shao Jie Ang – Mini-Interview #5

Mini-Interview #5
Shao Jie Ang
Before The French Cellar, how did you pick up French wines?
I started learning about wines with my universities’ wine societies. In UCL, we had weekly themed tastings that ranged across regions and varietals. I then did my Masters in Stanford University, which had a terrific wine society. We enjoyed comparing Old and New World wines and took many drives up to Napa Valley. These experiences exposed me to all sorts of wines, not just limited to French ones.
As a result of these educational Thursday nights, Friday mornings were always a struggle for most of us.
Since when and why are you The French Cellar subscriber?
I don’t exactly remember when I started but I think it was September 2015? (indeed!)The prices for well-curated wines are reasonable and the wines have been bang-on so far. I’m quite price sensitive plus you really can’t get a better quality-price here in Singapore. I’m also looking to further my wine education, maybe even certification, which means I do need to expand my “knowledge” of all sorts of wine.
You are Vineyard Gems subscriber, which regions surprised you the most so far?
I’d say Bourgogne but that was only because I’m not too familiar with the region, which made me more excited when Bourgogne wines were delivered.
Why would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends and colleagues?
Picking out good wines can be a challenge to most people. Remove that uncertainty with The French Cellar!

Why the Founder of HardwareZone invested in The French Cellar – Mini-Interview #2

The French Cellar mini-interview #2

Jackie Lee
Founder, HardwareZone (sold to SPH in 2006)
CEO, clickTRUE Group
Chairman, The French Cellar Asia

Jackie, how did you hear about The French Cellar?

I first heard about The French Cellar when I ordered a few bottles of wine from UOB Reserve vouchers in November 2013. My initial thoughts were:

1- While I love drinking wines, I do not know how to choose a good bottle of wine, especially French wines (what they called old world wines).

2- Having a wine expert to choose for me, and delivering the bottles right from the vineyard to my doorstep sounds like great value and convenience.

And since the price point was really affordable, I decided to try it out.

After being pleasantly surprised having tried the first bottle, it wasn’t too long before my entire family realised The French Cellar’s  value proposition. My wife and mum found the wines from The French Cellar tasting much better  than the wines we had from wedding banquets or those I bought from retail shops. In retrospect, the bottles cost significantly less than those I purchased previously.

There was also an additional bonus. All the wines came with tasting notes. On top of savouring the wine, I was learning about which region the wines came from, and how to differentiate the smell of each wine. Learning more about  what wine I drank had never crossed my mind!

From a subscriber to … an investor?

After a few more orders, I decided to find out more about the company. I thought to myself that a wine subscription e-commerce business model was a very interesting idea and it could really solve a few pain points for both consumers as well as businesses.

When I dug more into the company, I found out that the founder is a Ph.D. scientist from the pharmaceutical industry and it’s a very young startup. With that, my business instinct took over and I sent out a Linkedin message to the CEO, Vincent Morello on 28th Jan 2014 for a meeting. With a few more follow-up talks, I invested in The French Cellar in March 2014.

Why did you invest in The French Cellar?

The French Cellar solves one fundamental problem for many consumers. When you are standing between rows of wines in a retail store, unless you are a wine connoisseur, chances are you will be confused about what is the best wine to buy. With more people enjoying wine in Asia as a way of life, whether it is sipping wine in the comfort of your home or drinking in a restaurant, The French Cellar helps to take away that chore of wine selection from you. Best of all, you know that the selection will always be done by an expert (Sommelier) and all you have to do is relax  and enjoy the wine with your loved ones.

In fact, wine subscription model is not new in UK, France or the US. Over the years, it is gaining popularity very quickly as consumers really enjoy the convenience. Being the first in Asia, The French Cellar has a first mover advantage in pioneering this business model for the wine industry.

In addition, I find their benefits really attractive:

1- A unique french wine discovery: Most wine lovers stick to a few trusted brands after a while. I honestly think that is because there is too much work and risk to try new ones. By signing up as a subscriber, you will really expand your choices without the risk (since they are carefully curated) and enjoy that pleasant surprise when you get charmed by 2 new bottles each month

2- Great Value and Convenience: The pricing for these wine is really affordable! The basic plan starts from S$79 for 2 bottles and they are delivered from the vineyards to the comfort of my doorstep. Easy!

3- Exclusive Curated Access to vineyard gems: You will hardly find their bottles in Singapore and Asia. These bottles are hand picked by a 3 star Michelin Sommelier in France every month. Tapping  into his access and experience and considering the price you pay as a consumer, it is a real steal!

4- Creating a scaleable Lifestyle & Edutainment Brand: The wine loving community is already a sizeable and growing one in Asian cities. The French Cellar platform will be a good place to round up this audience. I believe there is a market of  at least 1 million wine subscribers out there.

Last but not least, the management team is young and passionate – Vincent Morello, Eric Joubert, Nicolas Rebut and Wang Jin (The French Cellar, China). I get excited by their energy and ideas when we talked about how we could grow the business. Their commitment extended to putting up their own savings  to realise  the potential of their ideas.

Combining the above, The French Cellar can be potentially disruptive, if not enhancing, to the current way wines are appreciated and sold in Asia.

Rising mass affluence in Asia and growing Luxury aspirants in Asia, especially China and South East Asia, present the right indicators that this concept can scale and take off.

I really love the content, commerce and community angle to The French Cellar.

How your perception of French wine has changed?

After 2 years of subscriptions, through enjoying hundreds of different wine from more than 150 winemakers and through 15 regions, The French Cellar has helped me find enjoyable ways to understand and learn about the French regions and their wines.

I am 100% sure that if I have not been through the discovery journey, I will still be clueless about French wines.
In addition, through attending the many The French Cellar  community outreach activities  like public tasting and  corporate tasting events, I got to know and befriend many like-minded people. The subscription has also enriched my weekends with my family through the enjoying of food pairings and tasting with my parents. I would say such sessions helped me in communicating more with my old folks – talking about wine and life in general!

Huishan Lim & Scott Poh – Mini-Interview #4

Mini-Interview #4

Huishan Lim & Scott Poh
The French Cellar Members since 2014
scott
–
Huishan, why did you subscribe to The French Cellar?
I like good surprises and I like wine – having 2 good wines delivered to me on a monthly basis, delivering unexpected finds, is right up my alley. The wines go straight to my office, and it’s a great way to make sure I always have good wines on hand for “after work discussions”.
 –
Scott, you have two monthly wine subscriptions, Vineyard Gems and Tasting Voyage, may we know why?
I enjoy new experiences – drinks, food, and activities. And because I do not drink alone, 2 bottles a month are barely enough for my drinking sessions with family and friends. Subscribing to two plans gives me four different experiences – having worked out the math, subscribing to two plans gives me more value for money than ordering the wines separately.
 –
Huishan and Scott, you have participated in a few public and corporate wine tasting events, how were the experiences?
Scott: At these events, I enjoyed tasting a variety of wines from sparkling, whites, rosés, and a variety of reds at one go. Pairing with canapes, cheeses and oysters also opened my eyes to the world of wine pairings. These events were also casual and relaxed, with refills on the wines we like. If there can be more variety in locations and perhaps sit-down wine pairing dinners, there would be even more value for us in our wine discovery journey!

Huishan: I have been to a few events with my friends and colleagues, and I love how the events showcase wines as a social experience. I remember in particular the oyster tasting event – fresh, succulent oysters paired beautifully with wines are truly decadent! Something I really like about the events is also how they are not intimidating at all. The French Cellar guys are always happy to share their knowledge and wine trivia with us. It just makes the entire experience that much more fulfilling.
–
Huishan, What is the most surprising French wine & Asian meal pairing you did so far?
Steamboat!
 –
Huishan, Scott,  would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?
Scott: Only to the generous ones who are willing to share!
Huishan: I have recommended it to my colleagues and friends who enjoy their wines! We catalogue the wines on apps like Vivino and look forward to (and discuss!) each month’s selection.
–
Thanks a lot! Proud to have you in The French Cellar community

Award Winning French Wine Scholar chooses The French Cellar – Mini-Interview #1

The French Cellar mini-interview #1

Victor Koo
Sommelier
Certified Specialist in Wine
French Wine Scholar
– Victor, when and why did you subscribe to The French Cellar?
I joined TFC in November 2013. Having 2 bottles of wine delivered to your house every month is one way to stock up the wine fridge which seems to be empty most of the time in my case :)

– What do you think about our Vineyard Gems and Tasting Voyage selections of wines so far?
I am actually very impressed with what Nicolas Rebut has selected for both Vineyard Gems and Tasting Voyage. Many of the wines are not readily available in Singapore and some not even in Paris! I find the wines of Vineyard Gems to be fun and exciting whereas the Tasting Voyage are for those who are abit more discerning.

– Which wine impresses you the most? why?
There are many but I probably re ordered the Chateau Simone Rose the most. I am never a big fan of Rose but this stuff is serious.

– Would you recommend The French Cellar to your friends?
Duh (of course)
